Sindiso Khumalo is a brand that aims to create a melange between modern fashion while still remaining true to the Zulu and Ndebele heritage.
The brand of the future, Sindiso Khumalo exudes all aspects of a modern fashion House; with a look to the past using traditional motifs, to an eye for the future using sustainable handmade textiles.
The mastermind behind the brand
Sindiso Khumalo a native to the Kwazulu-Natal province of South-Africa, now based in Cape Town, achieves to combine sustainability and haute-couture in her collections. The designer has a Masters in Textile Futures from Central Saint Martins in London, which along with many other qualifications, enables Khumalo to create engaging patterns. It is key for Khumalo to stay true to her origin and to showcase both the Zulu and Ndebele heritage through her designs. As a textile designer, it is vital for Khumalo to not only create amazing designs but also to make sure that these garments are made of sustainable and handmade textiles.
In addition to creating impressive collections, Khumalo is well known for her exhibitions at the Royal Festival Hall in London, The Smithsonian Museum of African Art in Washington, and of course the Zeitz Mocaa Museum in Cape Town. Along with many exhibitions in world-famous museums, Khumalo also won Vogue Italia’s “Who’s On Next Dubai’ in October of 2015.
The Brand
With colourful designs and bold patterns, Sindiso Khumalo creates eye-catching collections. Using an array of different inspirations, from her ethnic heritage to empowerment, Sindiso creates striking designs. All designs in her collection are hand-drawn using watercolours and collage to materialise the different patterns. Khumalo also works with local NGOs to ensure the development of the handmade textiles to create her collections.
The brand covers all aspects a modern and contemporary fashion label should have. They create uniquely stunning pieces that have been published in Vogue UK, Marie Claire Magazine as well as many more. The brand promises ethical and sustainable productions of garments – something we hope to see more in the fashion industry. Lastly, although being a global brand, Khumalo nevertheless manages to integrate her heritage and culture into every piece.
Sindiso Khumalo’s Collection 4
Sindiso Khumalo’s Collection 4 emanates vibrance. The collection has many pieces, from dresses to trousers to tops. This collection brings a melange of textile textures as well as changing patterns to the table. The patterns on the textiles change from being organic fluid shapes on shiny fabric to stripes on a more firm and coarse fabric. The way the fabric flows in the wind portrays an endless continuity and flow in contrast to the harsh natural environment of the shoot.
