Flow of Forms – Fashion Soiree: The Politics of African Fashion

The exhibition Flow of Forms / Forms of Flow focuses on Design Histories between Africa and Europe through the prism of past, present and future: how did Africa influence design in European Modernism, what impacts did the European reform movements have on the African continent? What forms have social emancipation and the optimistic spirit of change taken?

We want to invite you to a fashion talk with Aperò and top fashion players from Africa. The talk will consider – The politics of African Fashion – for the Creative Africa industry & the importance of the global perspective.

 

The panelists:

  • Mimi Plange, Fashion Designer, (Ghana-Accra /New York)
  • Asanda Sizani, Editor-in-Chief of the South African Glamour, (Johannesburg),
  • Omoyemi Akerele, Founder of Lagos Fashion Week,  (Lagos)
  • Ola Shobowale, Creative Director and Brand Consultant of Infinite Beauty Factory (Nigeria-Lagos/ London)

 

The panelists will discus the relevanz of visual culture, copyrights and cultural appropriation in a globalized world. The case of the high end fashion brand Maxhosa by Laduma will be one topic of the discussion.

Die Ausstellung „Forms of Flow / Flow of Forms“ beschäftigt sich mit Designgeschichten zwischen Afrika und Europa. Mit dem Augenmerk auf Mode Made in Africa und zeitgenössisches Design afrikanischer Herkunft lädt die digitale Plattform Fashion Africa Now zum Apéro und zur Diskussion im Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg ein.

Ausgangspunkt sind dabei Modedesign und Styles vom afrikanischen Kontinent, die durch europäische und afrikanische Einflüsse ein neues Zusammenspiel kreieren. Inzwischen sind globale Brands aufgrund dieser vielfältigen Einflüsse entstanden, die internationale Erfolge feiern.

Mode ist immer politisch – und insbesondere Mode Made in Africa findet sich, gewollt oder ungewollt, immer wieder in sozialen und politischen Spannungsfeldern wieder. Themen wie Urheberrechte, kulturelle Aneignungen oder Produktionsbedingungen sind Teil dieser Diskussionen. Fälle, wie der des bekannten Designers Laduma Ngxokolo aus Südafrika, der gegen den Modekonzern Zara aufgrund verletzter Urheberrechte prozessiert, werden international bekannt und intensiv diskutiert.
