Connecting Afro Futures - Coming Up

We are happy to invite you visit and report on the exhibition Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion × Hair × Design – showing from 24th August to 1st December 2019 at the Kunstgewerbemuseum – Berlin’s Museum of Decorative Arts.

A young generation of African fashion designers is currently re-defining “African fashion” and establishing innovative design hubs throughout Africa. They are not only looking at aesthetic aspects but rather also engaging in cultural and political topics and presenting a decidedly decolonised self-image. For the Connecting Afro Futures exhibition project, Berlin’s Museum of Decorative Arts invited designers and artists from Uganda, Benin and Senegal to develop new works on the themes of fashion and hair. The multi-stage project began in November 2018 with a collaborative week-long workshop on global fashion, museum and collection policy, and decolonial discourses. In March and April 2019, the first installations were presented in Dakar and Kampala. From August – December 2019, the results of the project stations and collaborations will be presented at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin.

Eine junge Generation afrikanischer Modedesigner*innen definiert derzeit „afrikanische Mode” neu und etabliert innovative Design-Hubs in ganz Afrika. Dabei geht es nicht allein um ästhetische Aspekte, sondern vielmehr um ein kulturelles und politisches Engagement mit einem dezidiert dekolonialen Selbstverständnis. Das Kunstgewerbemuseum hat im Rahmen des Ausstellungsprojekts „Connecting Afro Futures“ Akteur*innen aus Uganda, Benin und dem Senegal eingeladen, neue Arbeiten zu den Themen Mode und Haar zu entwickeln. Das mehrstufige Projekt startete im November 2018 mit einem gemeinsamen Workshop zu den Themen globale Mode, Museums- und Sammlungspolitik und dekoloniale Diskurse. Im März und April 2019 wurden erste Arbeitsergebnisse vor Ort in Dakar und Kampala präsentiert. Im August 2019 werden die Ergebnisse der Projektstationen und Kollaborationen wiederum zurück nach Berlin ins Kunstgewerbemuseum gespielt.

With Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion × Hair × Design, the Kunstgewerbemuseum – Berlin’s Museum of Decorative Arts is opening its doors to an exhibition project devoted to the complex and multifaceted world of African fashion design and hairstyling – and, at the same time, is taking a position in the current debate about the approach taken by museums and their collections.

Reclaiming the narrative

A new generation of African fashion designers are rethinking contemporary “African fashion”. An empowered self-image and a home-grown aesthetic is being presented – challenging and side-stepping (neo)colonial thought patterns and beauty norms.   

Contemporary futuristic visions

Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion × Hair × Design focuses on two African fashion hubs: Dakar in the West and Kampala in the East. Having started in Berlin November 2018, and with two further project stations in Dakar and Kampala completed, the project returns to Berlin’s Kunstgewerbemuseum. The designers and artists invited to participate were given carte blanche to transform their visions of African fashion and hair into installations:

• With her mixed media installation “The Perfect Stereotype”, fashion designer Lamula Anderson of Lamula Nassuna (London, UK / Kampala, Uganda) connects the dots between historical women’s dresses with bustles to stereotypical colour associations in fashion and the afro.
• Fashion Label Bull Doff (Dakar/Senegal) have developed a work based on its current collection 54Punk, which combines traditional craftsmanship and punk rock aesthetic.
• The artist Meschac Gaba (Cotonou, Benin) will show his spectacular wig sculptures, inspired by Berlin’s famous architecture.
• In her work Barkcloth Connecting Afro Futures – Using the Signs of the Now, fashion designer José Hendo (London UK / Kampala, Uganda) uses the traditional Ugandan material of barkcloth to address questions of sustainability in contemporary fashion.
  Multimedia artist Njola Impressions (Kampala, Uganda) works with recycled industrial waste. Her work is a community-oriented practice, with the people, for the people, not just for galleries and catwalks, but also for the streets.
• Adama Paris (Dakar, Senegal), fashion designer and founder of Dakar Fashion Week and Black Fashion Week, questions beauty ideals and norms for hair and fashion in the African context with her installation Shameless Afro Hair.
  Artist and curator Ken Aïcha Sy (Dakar, Senegal) from Wakh’Art, will present the work Baadaye (Swahili for future) – a photographic and videographic survey of Afro-futuristic visions for the African continent.
• Fashion Label Tondo Clothing (Kampala/Uganda) will present their great mission and unique style in Berlin. They call it VOUAFF: visions of urban African future fashion. VOUAFF focuses on bridging the gap between ancient traditional African fashion and current fashion trends on the urban scene.

The installations will be complemented with works by illustrator Diana Ejaita (Italy/Nigeria – Berlin/Germany) among others, as well as an exploration of hair and fashion in an African context comprising of fashion and music videos, photographs and illustrations. An accompanying programme with artist’s interventions, performances, workshops and panel discussions will run throughout the exhibition. We’ll keep you posted!

Be sure to look out for the exhibition’s magalog – a fashion magazine and exhibition catalog combined. It was edited by the exhibition curators: Claudia Banz, Cornelia Lund and Beatrace Angut Oola and will be published with the Kerber Verlag for the start of the exhibition.

Mit Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion x Hair x Design öffnet das Kunstgewerbemuseum
sein Haus einem Ausstellungsprojekt zur komplexen und vielseitigen Welt afrikanischen Modedesigns und Haarstylings – und bezieht damit zugleich Position in der aktuellen Diskussion um die Ausrichtung von Museen und ihren Sammlungen.

Zeitgenössische futuristische Visionen

Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion x Hair x Design fokussiert auf zwei Fashion-Hubs: Dakar in Westafrika und Kampala in Ostafrika. Angefangen im November 2018, kehrt das Projekt nach zwei Projektstation in Dakar und Kampala nun zurück ins Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin. Die eingeladenen Designer*innen und Künstler*innen erhielten Carte blanche, um ihre Visionen von afrikanischer Mode und Haar in eine Installation zu transformieren:

• Modedesignerin Lamula Anderson von Lamula Nassuna (London/UK, Kampala/Uganda) schlägt in ihrer Mixed-Media-Installation „The Perfect Stereotype“ einen Bogen von historischen Frauenkleidern mit Tournüre über stereotype Farbzuordnungen in der Mode zum Afro
• Das Modelabel Bull Doff (Dakar/Senegal) entwickelte eine Arbeit auf Basis seiner aktuellen Kollektion 54Punk, die traditionelles Handwerk mit Punk Rock verbindet.
• Der Künstler Meschac Gaba (Cotonou/Benin) zeigt spektakuläre Perückenskulpturen, die nach Berliner Architektur-Ikonen gestaltet sind.
• Die Modedesignerin José Hendo (London/UK, Kampala/Uganda) setzt sich in ihrer Arbeit „Barkcloth Connecting Afro Futures Using The Signs of the Now“ anhand des traditionellen ugandischen Materials „bark-cloth“ mit Fragen der Nachhaltigkeit in der zeitgenössischen Mode auseinander.
• Multimedia-Künstlerin Njola Impressions (Kampala/Uganda) arbeitet mit recycelten Industrieabfällen. Ihr Praxis ist gemeinschaftsorientiert: mit den Menschen, für die Menschen; nicht nur für Galerien und Laufstege, sondern auch für die Straßen.
• Adama Paris (Dakar/ Senegal), Modedesignerin und Gründerin der Dakar Fashion Week und der Black Fashion Week, hinterfragt in ihrer Installation „Shameless Afro Hair“ Schönheitsideale und -normen für Haar und Mode im afrikanischen Kontext.
• Die Künstlerin und Kuratorin Ken Aïcha Sy (Dakar/Senegal) von Wakh’Art stellt die Arbeit „Baadaye“ (Swahili für Zukunft) vor – eine foto- und videografische Befragung afrofuturistischer Visionen für den afrikanischen Kontinent.
• Fashion Label Tondo Clothing (Kampala, Uganda) bringt seine VOUAFF nach Berlin – das sind Visions of urban African future Fashion – Visionen urbaner afrikanischer Zukunftsmode. VOUAFF schließt die Lücke zwischen traditioneller afrikanischer Mode und aktuellen Modetrends in der urbanen Szene.

Die Ausstellung wird ergänzt durch Arbeiten von u. a. Illustratorin Diana Ejaita (Italien/Nigeria – Berlin/Germany) sowie weitere Darstellungen von Haar und Mode im afrikanischen Kontext wie Mode- und Musik Videos und Fotografien. Ein Begleitprogramm mit künstlerischen Interventionen, Performances, Poetry, Workshops und Artist Talks rundet das Projekt ab. Wir halten euch auf dem Laufenden!

Anlässlich der Ausstellung erscheint ein gleichnamiges Magalog – ein Mix aus Modemagazin und Ausstellungskatalog im Kerber Verlag. Herausgeberinnen des Magalogs sowie die Kuratorinnen der Ausstellung sind Claudia Banz, Cornelia Lund und Beatrace Angut Oola.

Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion × Hair × Design presents contemporary fashion and hair design from Uganda, Senegal and Benin. For the first time, the Museum of Decorative Arts is showing the work of designers and artists exclusively from Africa and the African Diaspora: Lamula Nassuna, Bull Doff, Meschac Gaba, José Hendo, Njola, Adama Paris, Ken Aicha Sy, Tondo Clothing and Diana Ejaita. The designers and artists received carte blanche to transform their visions of African fashion and hair into installations.

For the opening, we are putting together an interactive programme for you: In the exhibition’s Afro Hair District there will be a Live Braiding Session with Awa Kaloga and Mariama Faye from NYA – Braid Bar & Salon. In addition, the fashion installation by designer Adama Paris will be brought to life.

For your tastebuds: The catering will feature both East African and West African specialties, a highlight being Bananas&Breads by Trèsor Pembele promising “Berlin’s Best Banana Bread”.

For your earbuds: DJ PAM BAM (Accra / Berlin) and DJ Mo Lateef (Maputo / Berlin) will be bringing their record cases and selecting Old School, New School and Future beats for your listening pleasure. Expect Afrobeats, Afrohouse and a bit of RnB and Afro Soul in the mix.
