AFA MOVIE CLUB PRESENTS, IN COOPERATION WITH STADTKINO WIEN, THE DOCUMENTARY FABRIC – A TOP BUSINESS, WHICH FOLLOWS A LITTLE-EXAMINED CONNECTION BETWEEN NIGERIA AND AUSTRIA. THE SCREENING WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A TALK WITH DIRECTOR KATHARINA WEINGARTNER, BEATRACE ANGUT LORIKA OOLA, FOUNDER OF THE PLATFORM FASHION AFRICA NOW, AND SOCIOLOGIST, FASHION THEORIST, AND CULTURAL CRITIC MONICA TITTON.
On Tuesday, February 17, the AFA Movie Club, in cooperation with Stadtkino Wien, presents the documentary Stoff – ein Spitzengeschäft, a film that traces a largely overlooked connection between Nigeria and Austria.
The documentary spans from the fabric markets of Lagos, Nigeria, to the embroidery factories of Lustenau, Austria, and further back to the historical foundations of European wealth. It is a film about women, power structures, textiles, and the colonial threads that continue to shape Europe to this day.
Following the screening, a talk will take place featuring the film’s director Katharina Weingartner, independent interdisciplinary curator, Creative & Cultural Producer and founder of the platform Fashion Africa Now, Beatrace Angut Lorika Oola, and sociologist, fashion theorist, and cultural critic Monica Titton. Together, they will discuss the film and its broader thematic implications.
