El Houria is the name of the latest collection by fashion designer Yassin Boutayeb, who has been part of New York’s Fashion Week. This collection specifically refers to the cultural Moroccan background of the founder.
El Houria FW22 which means ‘Freedom’ in arabic, is a collection of celebration. It is about the freedom that makes us believe, that all can be achieved. That no one will stand in our way, because we can prevail. That our future is bright, because people were brave enough to fight for us. 66 years ago on March 2, 1956, Morocco is officially declared independent. Freedom! Freedom is something that we, kids of the diaspora are constantly searching for and we are getting there! This collection is also all about modesty in a different way. Taking the power of modesty and make it our own again.
My fashion brand name YDIASPORA refers to the experience of diasporic communities, respects the environment and promotes sustainability. The mispresentation of diasporic people often leads to an ambivalence of cultural identities and a lack of belongingness.” I want to bring us as a community together and to make us all feel seen. I want to express this “in-betweenness” of combined cultures by combining an appreciation of past cultural heritage with recent international trends. I want to mirror these layers of cultural influences through fashion” – Yassin Boutayeb.
All the fabrics were received by a very generous lady who donated them. The idea was to give the fabrics a life and that is how El Houria was created.
